NGC 253 Two-Sided Superwind
SE Halo Offset Pointing

The SE halo of NGC 253 has zero X-ray archival coverage. This idea proposes a ~110 ks XMM SE offset pointing to create a mirror-symmetric comparison with the existing NW halo archive (0723220101, 109.5 ks) and test whether the galactic wind is truly symmetric.

01 · WHY THIS MATTERS

A resolved two-cone test of whether starburst winds inject energy and metals symmetrically into the CGM.

Load-bearing belief tested: Starburst-driven winds inject energy, momentum, and freshly synthesised metals into the CGM symmetrically about the disk. A bipolar wind launched from a symmetric disk boundary should be symmetric if it is launch-dominated. A measurable asymmetry instead means that the wind is shaped by its environment — halo confinement or ambient ISM — not only by its energy source.

Who depends on it: (1) cosmological subgrid-feedback recipes, whose mass/energy loading factors (η) are specified per cone and assumed equal on both sides; (2) CGM chemical-enrichment models that assume winds enrich the halo isotropically; and (3) studies that infer feedback from a single cone — the usual situation for distant, unresolved galaxies. If the nearest well-resolved double cone is measurably asymmetric, single-cone feedback estimates are systematically biased and CGM enrichment is anisotropic.

Both outcomes change the inference

Asymmetric → rejects symmetric injection as a default; single-cone extrapolations are biased; metal and energy escape versus fountain recycling differs by side Symmetric → directly supports symmetric injection in a resolved double cone and tests whether Bauer (2008)'s SE-soft result was an unequal-volume geometry artifact rather than a pressure asymmetry

Multiphase benchmark: a clean, low-prior test

  • The cold molecular outflow is already reported as approximately symmetric (Bolatto 2013; CO S≈N), providing an independent cold-phase benchmark.
  • A hot-phase (X-ray pressure) asymmetry would therefore be a clean multiphase-decoupling result: the hot wind and entrained cold gas are shaped by different agents.
  • Hot-phase symmetry instead supports multiphase coherence. Either result is interpretable against an independent phase.

Honest ceiling: ApJ / MNRAS class, not Nature. A clean pressure-symmetry test in one galaxy does not by itself transform a class of objects.

The D047 science-value axis is adequate: the measurement tests a genuine load-bearing belief and both branches are useful, but generalisation remains single-object. Decisiveness is its precondition, not a substitute for scientific value.

02 · FALSIFIABLE CLAIM

The SE halo has a thermal pressure, density, or abundance profile that is statistically distinguishable from the NW halo, implying an asymmetric wind; or the two sides are indistinguishable and the wind is symmetric.

Estimand: Pressure ratio RP = PSE / PNW = (ne,SE × kTSE) / (ne,NW × kTNW), extracted from spectral fits in mirror-symmetric sectors.

Decision threshold: k = 1.96 (two-sided 95% Gaussian), Amin = 0.20 (minimum physically interesting asymmetry), max-σR ≈ 0.102.

Three outcomes: 95% log-ratio CI of RP excludes 1.0 → asymmetry detected CI includes 1.0 and σR < max-σR → symmetric wind σR ≥ max-σR → inconclusive (systematics dominate)

This is preregistered: k, Amin, aperture-selection protocol, and the fifth INCONCLUSIVE condition are all frozen before observation. The σR→∞ loophole is closed (cycle 5 R5 OUTCOME A).

03 · WHY NEW OBSERVATION

The SE halo is a true coverage gap, not an underexploited dataset.

✕

XMM Archive

Only NW halo offset pointing exists (0723220101, 109.5 ks, 2013). All other pointings cover the nucleus only. No SE halo observation in any archive.

✕

Chandra

Deepest observation (601409, 151.6 ks ACIS-I) has 16.9′ FOV — covers the central galaxy but misses the extended halo. No halo-offset mosaic.

✕

Suzaku

803004010 is 30.15′ from the I002 SE field center — well outside the XIS FOV and 27.59′ footprint-overlap threshold. No overlap.

✕

eROSITA

NGC 253 is at l=97° (eastern hemisphere) — not in the eRASS1 public catalog. No eROSITA data exists.

Why XMM?

  • Large FOV (~30′) — a single offset pointing covers the entire halo sector
  • Soft X-ray response (< 1 keV) — halo thermal gas (kT ~ 0.1–0.3 keV) emits primarily in the soft band
  • RGS — SE pointing probes SE wind kinematics and chemical enrichment, complementing NW RGS

06 · MAIN RISK

Soft-proton flaring may reduce effective exposure

NGC 253 is at b = −88° (high background variability). The SE halo region may be more contaminated by foreground/background emission than the NW. If clean time fraction drops below 50%, effective exposure halves and the spectral comparison degrades. This is an identified risk, not a fatal flaw — R6-lite labels it marginal, requiring actual observation to confirm clean time.

07 · CLAIM BOUNDARY
